Garage Door Balance

October 7, 2009

THE GARAGE DOOR BALANCE TEST:
A garage door is only going to work with an opener as well as it works for you manually. When a garage door is disconnected from its opener it should be easy to work by hand. If your garage door is out of balance in either direction it will stress out your opener. Out of balance door will decrease the life span of your opener dramatically.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE SECTIONAL GARAGE DOORS:
First make sure the garage door is closed. Then locate your emergency disconnect (find the pull cord) on the operator. Pull lightly to disconnect the traveler lock. Now you’re ready to work the garage door manually. (PLEASE be careful not to put your fingers in between the sections). While standing inside the garage, please stand facing the middle of the garage door. Now that you’re at the middle, slide your hands under the bottom of the door. (Unless there is a handle available, use the handle). Next you should try to manually open garage door. You should be able to work the door with little to no effort. The door should easily stop almost anywhere in its tracks.

Signs of a door out of balance will be as follows: a door will not sit evenly on the floor or does not glide easily up and down the track and the door will have a tendency to not stay open and keeps drifting down. Out of balance door will cause wear and tear on your garage door opener. Springs are dangerous and should only be adjusted by a professional. If you find or notice any of these issues your door needs to be adjusted. Contact Cookson Door Sales of Arizona for service. Home owners who live outside of Arizona should contact a local garage door repair service.

Are You Thinking About Choosing A Garage Door

July 23, 2009

Your garage door is one of the most important features of your home’s exterior. It is the largest movable object on your home. But it is also equally important from an interior point of view. Therefore, it is wise to consider several factors before purchasing a garage door. In today’s world of ever rising heating costs, it is important to purchase a garage door with a high R value (resistance to heat flow). This may cost a little more initially, but will pay for itself in no time as a result of fuel savings. It is a good idea to buy the highest R value that you can afford. If you have plans on heating and / or cooling our garage this may be well worth the money. Keep in mind the tax incentive a savings of up to $1,500 for some select garage doors purchased through December 31, 2010.
A garage door can help to improve the overall facade of your home. Because garage doors now come in a wide variety of styles and colors, a garage door purchase can involve making quite a few choices. The style of your home will influence your options to a large extent. This means selecting a corresponding panel style. Garage door panel styles range from “flush” , “raised panels” all the way to more elaborate panel styles, Including wood, wood appliqué, copper clad, Exquisite and ideal faux barn doors or old country doors complimented with exterior ornamental hardware, faux wood paint finishes. And more coming out at the end of summer, the FeTerra and the Canyon Ridge

Garage doors are now offered in a variety of fade resistant colors to complement your home. When considering a garage door color, bring home several sample color chips square of actual garage door material. Typically the color of the garage door will match the trim color of your home, but this is not a hard and fast rule.

Windows can add to the aesthetic appeal of a garage door and the front of your home. These will reduce the R value, but will add some light into the garage. The glass for the windows also comes in a variety of styles, and the choice of glass may affect the overall cost of the door. Window designs range from acrylic leaded and beveled to frosted leaded and beveled to simple snap-in styles. The snap-in window designs also come in a variety of colors or they can be painted. The springs and hardware usually have a separate warranty period from the actual doors. In general, doors that are guaranteed forever are usually made better. This can be a selling feature when it is time to move.

When purchasing a replacement garage door, it is imperative to consider whether your existing garage door opener will be sufficient to open the new garage door. Some of the new models of doors are heavier than older models due to stronger steel, wood and insulation.

There is a benefit to having a garage door company replace the opener and door at the same time, so that it will be the company’s liability to fix future problems of any type. There are basically four types of drives for garage door openers: belt, chain, screw drive and jack shaft. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Most of the differences lie in the quietness of operation and the cost.

So, if you’re looking to replace your garage door and or your garage door opener, contact a reputable dealer. The only one that I would recommend would be Cookson Door Sales of Arizona, serving the valley of the sun since 1991. Cookson Door Sales has a full service fleet ready to help at a moment’s notice. There committed sales workforce is ready to help you with any questions you may have.

Yes, Even a Garage Door can be “Green”

July 16, 2009

Green

Homeowners looking for ways to make their house “green” can start by taking stock in an unlikely home commodity – the garage door. As the largest moving part on a home, the garage door plays an important role in maintaining its structural integrity and energy efficiency – two important criteria in green building design.

Long-Lasting Products, Fewer Replacements:

Sustainability is a key element of green building, and, with a life cycle of between 15 – 20 years, an investment in a durable garage door that can withstand the rigors of daily use is money well spent for a home and the environment.

“Long-lasting products significantly reduce the impact of manufacturing and building on the environment, as well as fuel costs associated with distribution, and general waste,” says Pat Lohse, vice president of marketing for garage door manufacturer Clopay Building Products. Or contact Clopay’s Authorized Dealer, Cookson Door Sales of Arizona.

Some characteristics to look for when shopping for a door that’s built to last are galvanized torsion springs, which look better and last 50% longer than the industry’s standard oil-tempered springs, heavy-gauge steel to ensure a quality appearance, dent resistance and quiet operation, a hot dipped galvanized coating topped with a baked-on paint finish that resists fading and peeling, insulation that is contoured and bonded on both sides of the door panel for improved dent resistance, strength and R-value.

Steel and composite carriage house doors are an increasingly popular alternative to traditional wood doors because they are low maintenance, insulated and won’t fade, rot, warp or crack, meaning they won’t need to be refurbished or replaced as frequently as a doors constructed from natural material.

Energy Efficiency:

An insulated garage door can reduce overall household energy consumption if the garage is attached to the home since living space is usually adjacent or above.
It has such a significant impact that the Internal Revenue Service has declared certain models eligible for an energy savings tax credit under the Energy Tax Incentives Act provided the door meets specific criteria, and was installed in an existing home from January 1, 2006 to December, 31, 2010. The maximum credit is $1,500 for materials only. Homeowners should contact their installing dealer to obtain a manufacturer’s certification if their garage door qualifies.

Clopay Building Products premium “4000” series three-layer “sandwich” doors, featuring a layer of environmentally safe, CFC-free, expanded polystyrene insulation bonded between two layers of durable 24-gauge steel are among the approved models that qualify for the tax credit.

This construction method also helps reduce noise and minimize unsightly dents and dings, one of the main reasons why homeowners choose to replace a door before it reaches its maximum life expectancy.

Tips for Choosing a Green Garage Door

Can a garage door be green? Yes, but homeowners have to do their part by choosing a model that supports green building principles. Here’s how:

1. Choose a low-maintenance insulated steel or steel and composite door. Purchase a qualified energy efficient model from a certified manufacturer before the end of 2010 and you could be eligible for an Energy Savings tax credit. If wood is a must-have for aesthetic purposes on a home exterior, choose a manufacturer that uses naturally fallen materials or those harvested from sustainable forests.

2. Support manufacturers who utilize recycled materials and are environmentally conscious in their manufacturing and distribution processes. For instance, find out if they use recycled materials, fuel efficient transport vehicles, or have a program in place to help reduce waste of disposable goods.
